Early Life and Background

Virgil van Dijk is a native of Breda, a city in the southern part of the Netherlands, where he was born on the 8th of July, 1991. His father, Ron van Dijk is Dutch, and his mother, Hellen Chin Fo Sieeuw is of Afro-Surinamese origin with some Chinese ancestry through his maternal great-grandfather, who is said to have been a native of Guangdong, China and had moved to Suriname around 1920.

Van Dijk experienced his childhood mainly in the Kesteren neighborhood of Breda. Besides him, his family includes a younger brother named Jordan and a sister named Jennifer. When he was a little boy, his parents’ separation came as a big change for him. After a very short period of living with his father, he made the decision to switch back to living with his mother. After that, he didn’t have any contact with his father anymore. This is the reason why he has only his first name on the back of his shirt. He made this change known publicly in 2018.

During his teenage years, Van Dijk had a part-time job as a dishwasher at a restaurant near his house. He managed to do that and still find time to go to football training academies. If you asked anyone at Willem II, the club where he went through the youth ranks, they would say that they were not really confident about his potential.

Family and Relationships

Van Dijk got to know his wife Rike Nooitgedagt in 2011 when he was just 20 years old. They got hitched in the summer of 2017. Rike, who used to be a fashion sales manager, totally dropped her career after Van Dijk was signed by Celtic in 2013. They are parents of 4 kids. Their first child was born in 2014.

In September 2025, a stand at Sportpark Prinsenhoeve, the place where the youth team of Van Dijk’s former club Willem II plays, was renamed to Virgil van Dijk Tribune in his honor, as a tribute to his unbelievable development from a youth player to a world-class defender.

Virgil van Dijk Early Football Journey

Van Dijk first started playing football at WDS ’19, a local amateur club in Breda. After that, he became part of the youth academy at Willem II Tilburg. At first, he was a striker and midfielder but gradually he was shifted to defense. But, Willem II did not see him as a top player and so gave him no professional contract.

Van Dijk switched to FC Groningen’s academy on a free transfer in 2010. At last, he was given a chance to grow professionally. Not only at Groningen, was his development slow. He could hardly get into the first team and was not highly rated by everyone around him. His evolution as a player depended on his openness to the coaches’ advice, willingness to take criticism, and continuous desire to improve.
