He went to Richmond College in Galle, which has a very high quality education and is known to produce many great cricket players. While playing school cricket he was able to improve his bowling, batting and knowledge of how matches are played. This first step of being a leg-spinner provided him with a good base to start off on as a professional cricket player. Players Biography tells us about this time in his life where he developed as a cricketer and also that he wanted to be able to play at the highest level possible.

His progression through young adult cricket ultimately provided him access to professional opportunities and a spot on the Sri Lankan National Team.

Early Cricket Journey

Hasaranga began to develop his leg spin bowling during the initial stages of his cricket career. He also started to learn how to help out with the bat. As a young cricketer, Hasaranga became known for taking wickets and for providing teams with another option when it came time to bat at the bottom of the batting lineup.

After advancing through the ranks of Sri Lanka’s age-group cricket, he began playing in senior domestic competition. The way that he was able to use different speeds, trajectories, and spin to disrupt opposing batsmen drew attention to him.

In July of 2017, a huge milestone occurred for him. On that day, he had the opportunity to make his One Day International (ODI) debut against Zimbabwe. During that game, he became the first Sri Lankan bowler to take a hat-trick in an ODI debut. His performance showed people what type of wicket-taking ability he possessed and started to build his name internationally.

During the 2023 edition of the LPL, he was a major factor in the success of B-Love Kandy and contributed to their winning the championship by contributing with both bat and ball.

He has also competed in international franchises, which include tournaments in the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and the Caribbean. Playing in these leagues has allowed him to develop familiarity with a variety of pitches, batting techniques, and strategic plans; thus enhancing his knowledge of T20 cricket.

Wanindu Hasaranga IPL Team 2026

In 2026, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bought Wanindu Hasaranga at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for ₹2 crore. However, due to a hamstring injury suffered while playing in the first game of Sri Lanka’s 2026 T20 World Cup, he missed out on playing in IPL 2026.

LSG replaced Hasaranga with George Linde, a South African all-rounder, on 10 April 2026. This meant that while Hasaranga was part of the original plan for LSG, he was no longer considered a member of the playing squad for the rest of the season.

During his IPL career, he has played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals. He is a leg spin bowler who takes wickets during the middle overs of the game. This makes him a very good choice as a player for many different teams that want a veteran of T20 cricket.
